Why does my dog scoot on the carpet?

Almost always one of three things, in order of likelihood:

1. Anal glands — full or impacted. The two small scent sacs near the anus can get blocked, especially in smaller breeds. Symptoms: scooting, biting at the rear, fishy smell on bedding. Vet or groomer can express them in a few minutes.

2. Worms or parasites — particularly tapeworm (visible rice-grain segments near the anus or in stool). Common after a flea problem. Treated easily with a dewormer from your vet, but get the right one — over-the-counter doesn't catch all species.

3. Itch from allergies or dry skin — environmental, food, or grooming-related. Usually paired with paw-licking, ear-scratching, redness around the rear.

Less common but serious: a tumour or infection in the anal area. If scooting is sudden, frequent, or paired with blood, swelling, or yelping, see a vet within a few days, not weeks.

Cleaning up afterwards: enzymatic cleaner (the same kind for accidents) handles the smell. Plain soap doesn't, and bleach is too harsh.
